Topic 1 DQ 1

            Personally, spirituality characterizes having trust in a force bigger than oneself or any individual. Spirituality also entails believing in the existence of greater power than individual power. Spiritual belief is essential in guiding nurses to foster patient care, provide compassionate care, and understand others. Spirituality can also help nurses to support patients emotionally, inform crucial health decisions, and improve their entire living levels (Paul Victor & Treschuk, 2020). As such, nurses need to understand the vital role of spirituality in healthcare and seek the patient’s spiritual and religious preferences to enhance care delivery.  Nearly all patients are inclined to certain spiritual values that could potentially be religious. Sometimes the patients or their families are unaware of their spirituality and they may find themselves asking for spiritual support without acknowledging it. As such, nurses should be keen to notice the spiritual needs of a patient irrespective of how they are expressed (O’brien, 2021). Some of the factors that demonstrate spiritual anguish include belief in punishment, lack of purpose, feeling of isolation, concerns about the future, and despair.

            As a nurse, my conception of spirituality can greatly influence the way of caring for patients. The first step is to develop an understanding of a patient’s spiritual needs by engaging patients and using connections with family and friends. In turn, the spiritual needs of the patient should be integrated into the treatment plan (Ghorbani et al., 2021).  Respecting the spirituality of patients, developing a therapeutic relationship, comforting, and having effective communication enhance the values of the patients and improve health outcomes. Some strategies that can be used to improve spiritual care include encouraging patients’ religious practice, comforting patients through effective communication, showing compassion, and praying with patients.

            The aspect of the topic reading I found most interesting is how Christian worldviews and medicine were addressed. The idea of the potential existence of Christian understanding and modalities to medicine is intriguing. Religion often contradicts science in many aspects (Upenieks et al., 2022). Whether or not there could be a middle ground to this controversy is a matter that should be investigated further. It would be interesting to determine various questions including to what degree is science and religion compatible? Do religious beliefs support science, or do they inexorably present barriers to scientific inquiry? I understand that both spirituality and science are critical to healthcare. As such, nurses and other health care professionals need to acknowledge when to apply spirituality and science independently and when to integrate them to enhance patient care (Paul Victor & Treschuk, 2020).

            Based on the reading, I have realized several things about disease and healing. The disease involves a shift from normal health status, causative factors, epidemiology, and risk factors. On the other hand, healing involves a process of reinstating the body, spirit, and mind of an individual to normal health status. Healing involves various factors including health care services, prevention, treatment, and alternative treatment.  Disease should be approached holistically by ensuring the well-being of the spiritual, physical, and mind to create balance with all aspects of life to promote healing (Frisch & Rabinowitsch, 2019).  Treatment of the disease requires healing techniques with the potential to influence the entire body to facilitate holistic healing. People need to pursue the meaning of their lives during times of despair and times of comfort. Nurses should help patients to acknowledge the reason and meaning of their disease and also help them in the healing process by giving them hope.
