Population Health Essay

An advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) has the main responsibility of ensuring quality and safe care for patients. However, by training, an APRN is expected to do more. For example, they come up with strategies to advocate for equitable population health services and policies (Nsiah et al., 2019). In addition, an APRN has to be aware of the barriers or challenges to population advocacy and formulate strategies to overcome the challenges.

As an APRN, one of my future roles is developing programs and engaging in initiatives that advocate for equitable population health services and policies. For example, vulnerable populations usually face insufficient access to health services due to various reasons such as lack of enough money and education. Therefore, an APRN can organize for educational initiatives to teach them about healthcare access and healthy living. Another role is focusing on the social determinants of health and speaking strongly on behalf of the vulnerable, disadvantaged, and the poor such that a nurse creates an environmental, economic, and social condition where everyone accesses optimal health and experience health equity in the form of emotional/social, mental and physical well-being (Williams et al., 2018).

As earlier indicated, population advocacy is away on ensuring equitable population health service and policies. However, various barriers or challenges are expected. For example, I would face a potential lack of support from healthcare organizations (Abbasinia et al., 2020). The leaders can show less support for the advocacy efforts for various reasons. One way to overcome this barrier is aligning the advocacy goals with the organizational vision and mission and actively seeking organizational support. The other possible barrier is the lack of motivation and not getting enough time for interaction with communities, families, and patients. This can be solved by teaming with other like-minded nurses to help in motivating each other.
