Practicum Activities Reflection:

Within the past two weeks (weeks three and four) of my practicum lesson, I have learned many factors that affect the outcome in the healthcare setting. Among these factors, leadership remains instrumental in driving the healthcare organization to achieve its goals. Besides, I have also realized that employees in the healthcare setting form a central role in achieving the desired quality of healthcare (Bennett & Hylton, 2020). The relationship we developed with our mentors within the practicum setting focused on advancing our nursing skills and meeting patient needs. The preceptors acted as teachers and mentors within the setting. They invested their time and efforts to ensure that all the students in practicum practice appreciated working in the healthcare setting and felt motivated to meet their career goals in healthcare.

The mentors focused on inspiring the team. These leaders made us understand that the first step of meeting the desired goals in the healthcare setting is by making employees feel a sense of belonging and satisfaction with their roles in a healthcare setting (Al Kuwaiti & Al Muhanna, 2018). The increased level of job satisfaction among healthcare workers would have a positive effect on motivation among the employees. I could see the mentors becoming slow to anger and treating simple mistakes as learning points. Indeed, the sacrifice these leaders showed was meant to inspire the nurses of practice to understand the field and their expectations within the clinical settings.

The social skills demonstrated by the nurse leaders in this setting were also important in defining the leadership style. The leaders could deviate from the norm of the clinical setting to discuss various social life issues and allow the nurses to open up about their social life. They believe that sharing information about social life is important in solving some of the social problems that might affect nurses’ output in the clinical setting (Bennett & Hylton, 2020). Healthcare leadership requires personalities with the power to control the social life of the nurses. For instance, a social problem might affect these nurses’ state of mind, which would negatively impact their output in healthcare. Effective leaders ensure that all nurses are in their right state of mind to meet the desired outcome.

Application of Leadership:

The leadership style learned within my practicum setting has changed my thinking on effective change management within any professional setting. In my professional life, I would manage change through my team. The employees are the main pillar that defines success or failure in a proposed change. For instance, if employees or healthcare workers have a limited understanding of the proposed change, they would resist the change because they do not see the value that these changes would have on their professional practice (Galli, 2018). Therefore, my leadership principle should focus on team unity towards driving change. This approach would imply that my team would hear about the proposed changes from my mouth, where I will be explaining the need for the proposed change. I will also provide a platform where employees would give their opinions about the proposed change. Incorporating their ideas on the change would increase the chances of all employees supporting the proposed change.

This approach is related to strategic management principles as it focuses on addressing the needs of the employees regarding the proposed change. The management will record the success of change if they use minimal time and funds in implementing change (Galli, 2018). Therefore, leadership style has a positive impact on driving change in the healthcare setting. Reducing the impact of the employees on a proposed change would reduce the chances of meeting the desired needs. Leaders have the power to drive change by gaining authority among the employees that would empower the employees to meet the desired changes.

Practicum Project Preparation:

My project goals align with the mission and vision of the organization of advancing the quality of care in the healthcare setting. The approach given to all activities within my practicum setting aims to drive change that would bring a positive change in the healthcare setting. While there might be other approaches to meeting my institution’s mission and goals, leadership remains the most effective way of meeting most of my desired goals within the practicum setting. It is important to align my project goals with the mission and vision of my organization to remain significant in the healthcare setting and develop a positive impact in the healthcare setting.

Leadership Video Reflection:

Servant leadership focuses on inspiring others by providing an example. Such leaders invest much in the development of their employees. For instance, they believe that training employees in better skills would be a positive move within the organization (Bennett & Hylton, 2020). Therefore, the first thing I can incorporate from servant leadership is their role in inspiring others.

The second thing I would learn from these leaders is the strong relationship between them and the subjects. They ensure that they build a relationship of trust and respect that allows the employees to enjoy learning from leaders. One of the most significant factors affecting the success of leaders is the authority they can derive from their employees (Bennett & Hylton, 2020). Instilling a culture of respect and honesty is an ethical practice that affects the organization’s success. Therefore, the authority of the leader would as well start by creating a positive culture of honesty and respect.

Journal entries should include a record of the number of hours spent with your nurse leader each week (***Number of hours for this timeframe is 24 hours).

Write a journal entry of 750-1,500 words on the subject of authority, including the following:
