Nurses should have cohesive relationships with their leaders and colleagues to provide competent care. Edmonson and Zelonka (2019) described bullying as unwanted harmful actions toward others intending to humiliate, distress, or offend. As Gaines (2021) further noted, nurses should engage in collective effort measures to improve the ethical environment for safe, quality health care. Bullying requires a similar approach. Nurse leaders should collaborate with colleagues and other staff to establish the cause and jointly develop a lasting solution. Engagement, active communication, and respecting professional boundaries are effective measures of maintaining professional conduct. Such an approach to decision-making would ensure that the solution is universally agreed upon and the victims and culprits can implement it.
Differing Roles of Nursing Leaders and Nursing Managers
Although leadership and management overlap, they contrast in many ways. Hence, nursing leaders and managers use different approaches to address an issue. According to Whitney (2018), the work of a nurse manager usually involves planning, organizing, controlling, and decision-making. Decision-making follows the organizational policies and procedures, while directing involves motivating and empowering others through goal setting, communication, and feedback. Conversely, leadership involves influencing people to achieve a group’s goals enthusiastically (Whitney, 2018). Unlike authority and control that require nurses to hold a position, leadership is acquired naturally; hence, all nurses are leaders.
To address bullying and promote patient safety and quality care, nursing leaders should blend leadership and management roles, skills, and principles. For instance, an in-depth assessment of the causes of bullying requires critical-thinking skills, professionalism, and the ability to control emotions. Whether leaders or managers, nurses should consider multiple options in decision-making (Whitney, 2018). Such options for addressing bullying include implementing zero-tolerance policies, motivation programs, and training initiatives. Nurse leaders and managers should also integrate the principles of change theory into decision-making. Change theory emphasizes using motivation to empower people and increase their desire to change (Whitney, 2018). For instance, incentives and healthy work environments can trigger positive change and prevent bullying.
Additional Aspects for Managers and Leaders
Nurse leaders and managers require multiple skills to transform health care environments. Other aspects that nurse leaders and managers need to initiate include active communication, conflict management, and a culture of evidence-based practice. Active communication is essential in interprofessional collaboration and critical where teamwork is required. Conflicts are typical when solving issues that require integrating diverse ideas. Conflict management strategies include dominating when quick actions are needed and integrating ideas where goals of both sides are needed (Whitney, 2018). A culture of evidence-based practice values scientific evidence in decision-making. It ensures that decisions are accurate, reliable, and lasting.
Leadership Style to Best Address Bullying
Addressing bullying characterizes the role of nurse leaders in delivering safe and efficient care. Since effective handling of the problem requires behavior and culture change, a leadership approach centered on transformation and engagement is the most effective. As a result, the transformational leadership style would be the most suitable for addressing bullying. Its defining elements include inspiration, focusing on long-term success, and taking care of followers (Seljemo et al., 2021; Whitney, 2018). The implication is that nurse leaders and managers should inspire the affected health care setting towards a cultural shift. Victims should be inspired to report and resist bullying. Focusing on long-term success implies developing long-lasting strategies that apply to both bullies and victims.

Bullying is a common phenomenon in health care settings. It affects nurses’ emotional well-being and overall satisfaction. As a risk to patient safety and care quality, bullying requires integrating nursing leaders’ and managers’ skills, principles, and roles. It requires critical thinking, communication, and leading change through a shared vision. Many leadership styles can effectively address bullying since some situations require control while others necessitate engagement and guidance. However, the transformational leadership style would be the most effective since it incorporates diverse ideas and focuses on long-term success.
