The National League of Nursing’s core competencies is essential in providing an evidence-based foundation in the nursing learning curriculum. These competencies have been divided into eight. They include facilitating learning, enhancing learner development and socialization, employing assessment and evaluation strategies, involving in curriculum design and assessment of program outcomes, taking up the leadership role, ensuring progressive quality improvement in nursing education,  engaging in scholarships, and functioning within the educational environment (Fitzgerald et al., 2020). Nurse educators should possess these competencies for the successful performance of their respective responsibilities.

The educational environment greatly impacts the learners’ program outcomes. Function within the educational environment competency requires nurse educators to possess certain knowledge and skills in fulfilling their roles. To achieve this competency, nurse educators have a role to ensure the integration of theory with practice, stimulation of the learners’ interest in their field of training, encouragement of student participation, and respect and acknowledge students’ needs (El-Bahnasawy et al., 2021). In addition, nurse educators are tasked with promoting professional growth among learners, inter-professional collaboration among various stakeholders in nursing, enhancing learning through the adoption of technology, and providing mentorship by being a role model to the learners to promote professional values such as integrity (Gittings, 2019). This will give room for supportive student-centered and problem-based training in a favorable educational environment. As a nurse educator, my purpose to meet this competency will be guided by the above said roles.

Discharge of duties within the educational environment requires nurse educators to adequately comprehend the dynamics within the learning facilities. They will need to understand the internal and external factors such as economic and political dynamics, that may have implications for their roles. Due to their decision-making capabilities, involvement in legislative processes will be an added advantage in delivering high-quality nursing. This is because nurse educators will be able to make informed decisions and applicable recommendations not only within the institution but to the academic community at large.
