Advanced Registered Nursing Discussion Paper

Advanced registered nurses work in different work environments with diverse work requirements. Their skills, clinical expertise, and exposure allow them to engage in practice competently while exercising the freedom to act as independent practitioners. Characteristically, the advanced role gives nurse practitioners more responsibilities in advancing care, protecting individuals and communities, and innovating new health interventions. As implementers of evidence-based practice (EBP), advanced nurse practitioners also introduce necessary changes in health care settings to improve health outcomes (Lopes-Júnior, 2021). They guide patients and families in understanding health and illness as they guide health care organizations in developing appropriate interventions. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the scope of my future role, influential nursing organizations in advancing the role, and an evolving issue likely to affect my scope of practice in the next few years.

Advanced registered nurses specialize in different areas depending on their skills, interests, and career goals. My current skills give me a solid foundation to engage in nursing leadership. In health practice, the primary mandate of a nurse leader is to oversee units and ensure nurses follow the right procedures for maintaining safety and achieving high-quality care. Like other roles, nursing leadership will continue advancing and integrating new roles. As Azar (2021) posited, nurse leaders will work more as scientists and innovators in the advancing practice to enable them to address patient care issues effectively and lead health care teams competently. Besides the expanded mandate, excellence in this mandate will require nurse leaders to collaborate with other health care professionals and partners.

The role of a nurse leader as a scientist entails generating new knowledge through research. To excel as researchers, nurse leaders will work independently in clinical research studies and partner with other scientists within and outside the health profession. Azar (2021) explained that knowledge generated through research will be instrumental in dismantling structures that impede health equity and guide nursing professionals in implementing interventions to address social determinants of health (SDOH). With advances in health and technology occurring progressively, the role of nurse leaders as innovators is critical. As innovators, nurse leaders’ role entails developing processes and concepts for elevating health care (Wolf, 2019). The advanced scope will obligate nurses in leadership to develop more solutions that can produce real change while building effective partnerships with other practitioners.

Certification Agencies

Before joining the nursing practice, advanced registered nurses should demonstrate adequate skills to perform their roles. Leadership certification demonstrates that a nurse has acquired the essential elements of nursing leadership. One of the main certifications for nurse leaders is the Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) Certification. Offered by the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL), CNML confirms nurses as leaders in the health care community (AONL, 2022). The other certification agency for nurse leaders is the Commission on Nurse Certification (CNC). The CNC is an independent arm of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and certifies nurse leaders through the Clinical Nurse Leader Certification Program (AACN, 2022). Both agencies ensure nurse leaders have a solid foundation to influence change, develop policies, and lead teams, among other roles.

Professional Organizations Influential in the Scope and Influence of Advanced Nursing

Nurses face common challenges that should be addressed by working together as a health care community. Professional nursing organizations provide nurses an excellent opportunity to come together as professionals with similar objectives. Joining a professional nursing organization is instrumental to personal growth, professional support, and improved knowledge of health care matters (Cline et al., 2019). One of the professional nursing organizations influential in advancing the scope and influence of advanced nursing is the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Joining the movement empowers nurses to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care among individuals and communities throughout the United States (AANP, 2022). The other influential organization is the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), which is the national voice for academic nursing. AACN influences the nursing profession to improve care quality and supports essentials such as nursing education and research (AACN, 2022). The third highly influential organization is the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL). The organization seeks to transform care through influential nursing leadership (AONL, 2022). As a result, it empowers professionals in nursing leadership to excel in their roles.

The best organization for me is AONL. As a growing nurse leader, it is crucial to join an organization that will support my professional development overall. AONL’s goals and mission align with my worldview and philosophy of care. It seeks to transform health care through expert nursing leadership while using nursing leadership to advance health for all (AONL, 2022). I believe that all populations deserve equitable health care, achieved when leaders influence health care transformation and advocate for vulnerable populations. As Stamps et al. (2021) stated, quality and safe care is achieved by nurse leaders advocating for their work conditions and others’ welfare under difficult conditions. AONL empowers nurse leaders to excel in this role and embrace it as a core responsibility.

Joining AONL will help me to improve my practice through professional development, policy support, and being a part of a community pursuing a common goal. According to Gaines (2019), professional development for nurses is achieved by resource facilitation, opportunities, and enabling nurses to be up-to-date with current practices. AONL advances nurse leaders’ professional development through competent and innovative experiences. Besides, AONL serves as a collective voice for nurse leaders to influence health care transformation (AONL, 2022). As an advanced nurse practitioner and a growing leader, I need all this support to excel in practice. Joining a community of leaders and scholars will also improve my perspective of what nursing practice and leadership entail to make me a better practitioner overall.

Evolving Issue Likely to Affect My Role in the Next Few Years

Nursing is an evolving profession characterized by numerous practice changes. Accordingly, the advanced registered nurse must be aware of evolving issues and how they impact the nurse’s role, workplace, and entire practice. One of the evolving issues in nursing practice is workplace diversity. As Karam (2022) observed, the current workforce is diverse in gender and race, and more representation is essential for an inclusive workforce. Accordingly, organizational managers and nurse leaders must be aware of the effects of a diverse workforce and its role in the evolving practice. From a broader perspective, diversity has the potential to improve an organization from a business and patient outcome dimension. It helps to reduce health inequities and improves patient-provider interactions leading to better patient outcomes (Rovito et al., 2022). Such outcomes underline the need for me to be involved more in promoting workplace diversity and ensuring that my workplace(s) have implemented appropriate and sustainable programs to achieve a diverse workforce.

The need for a diverse workforce will influence the nursing profession and stakeholders immensely. To the nursing profession, workplace diversity will prompt changes in recruitment programs, training and development, and nurse empowerment. For instance, there is a growing emphasis on recruiting foreign-trained nurses to address the diversity challenge and improve workforce experience (Rovito et al., 2022). Stakeholders will also be concerned with the type and quality of nurse empowerment programs and support organizations in implementing programs for improving workplace diversity. An effective program to achieve this goal is diversity sensitivity training in the workplace to improve cultural competence and inclusion among health care professionals (Young & Guo, 2020). From a health perspective, the influence of workplace diversity in the evolving practice matters to the advanced registered nurse since it affects health outcomes. It shapes workplace relationships, patient-provider interaction, and essential processes such as recruitment, employee development, and retention.

Conclusion

Advanced registered nurses influence health care delivery immensely. For professional growth, they should join a nursing organization for resources, support, and advocacy. The purpose of this paper was to discuss the scope of my future role, appropriate nursing organization, and an evolving issue likely to affect my role. As a growing nurse leader and practitioner, I will be more involved in research and innovation to advance the nursing practice. The most appropriate professional nursing organization is AONL since it empowers nurse leaders. Among many evolving issues, workplace diversity is most likely to affect my role in the next few years.
