Assignment: NR718 Promoting Quality and Safety Sample

Advanced practice nurses (APNs) are essential in advancing quality and safety in healthcare systems. They possess the expertise and abilities as clinical and health systems leaders to identify problems, use evidence-based interventions and evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions (Htay & Whitehead, 2021). This paper examines the role of APNs as clinical and health systems leaders to promote quality and safety by discussing a quality or safety initiative at my organization to determine the success of the evidence-based intervention.

A quality initiative was implemented to address our organization’s high incidence of patient falls. Falls among psychiatric patients can lead to serious injuries, increase the length of hospital stay, and have a negative impact on the patient’s quality of life (Najafpour et al., 2019). The problem was identified through incident reports and a literature review, which showed that falls are a significant concern in psychiatric patients and that evidence-based interventions can help reduce falls.

My organization implemented evidence-based strategies, including educating staff and patients, modifying the environment and using patient-centered care plans. The staff were trained on strategies to prevent falls, including assessing the patient for falls, communication and documentation (Heng et al., 2020). Patients were also educated on fall risks and provided with non-slip footwear and visual cues, such as signs and labels, to identify fall hazards. Environmental modifications included the removal of clutter and obstacles, the installation of handrails and grab bars, and using bed and chair alarms.

One of the essential duties of a clinical health system leader is evaluating the effectiveness of evidence-based interventions. This can be accomplished by measuring outcomes like the number of falls before and after the intervention, their severity, and their effect on the length of hospital stay (Heng et al., 2020). APN leaders can also solicit feedback from staff and patients through surveys, focus groups, and one-on-one interviews to assess the intervention’s effectiveness and identify improvement areas. The evaluation results can then modify the intervention and improve patient outcomes.
