According to the textbook, nurses in various settings are adopting a research-based (or evidence-based) practice that incorporates research findings into their decisions and interactions with patients. How do you see this being applied in your workplace? In addition, how can you strive to make spirituality and self-care a practice for your patients as well as yourself? How does this practice align with the Christian worldview?

Topic 5 DQ 1

Qualitative and quantitative research methods are research techniques researchers use to collect data concerning specific issues. These two methods produce contrasting paradigms linked by positivism and interpretivism. Each of the two methods has its advantages and disadvantages. However, it is thought there are benefits and limitations to using both types in nursing studies. This discussion examines the advantages and disadvantages of using qualitative and quantitative approaches in nursing research.

Incorporating qualitative and quantitative research methods has enabled the broader investigation of complex issues in nursing. As a result, readers have been provided with more assurance in the study findings and conclusions, thereby strengthening the research findings (Adu et al., 2020). The research can identify limitations in complex social problems that are impossible with the qualitative and quantitative methods. Therefore, nursing researchers can make policy recommendations that address healthcare problems (Adu et al., 2020). Another benefit of using these two methods is triangulation, which helps validate the results collected using the individual methods (Dawadi et al., 2021). Lastly, the research can formulate more effective and concise conclusions since the results of one approach can be utilized to shape the utilization of the other (Dawadi et al., 2021). Ultimately, using both methods promotes the validity and reliability of study outcomes in nursing.

Using qualitative and quantitative research methods has also had some drawbacks. For instance, using both of these methods is considered time-consuming and costly (Rani et al., 2019). Using both methods simultaneously requires increased expertise and effort (Manimegalai, 2020). Lastly, nursing researchers must contend with potential inconsistency in study outcomes due to the subjectivity and objectivity of qualitative and quantitative research methods, respectively (Manimegalai, 2020). These are the limitations of using both methods.

In conclusion, using qualitative and quantitative research methods has been on the upward trend in nursing research. It is assumed to enhance the depth and breadth of knowledge concerning a specific nursing issue. This is because it combines the components of qualitative and quantitative research methods.

Topic 5 DQ 2

Evidence-based nursing practice (EBP) entails offering holistic quality care according to the latest research and knowledge instead of conventional techniques, personal beliefs, and insights from other workers. Nurses need to improve their knowledge and clinical practice by adopting research findings. Additionally, it is also vital to integrate spirituality and self-care in nursing. This discussion examines the implementation of evidence-based practice and spirituality in nursing care.

Evidence-based practice is critical in clinical settings as it provides quality care. There are various ways in which evidence-based practice is used in the workplace. For instance, it is used to inform clinical guidelines founded on evidence-based practice (Duff et al., 2020). These guidelines are utilized as a plan for quality patient care. It is also used in clinical decision-making in which nurses use evidence to inform choices of patient care and medication (Connor et al., 2023). These are some of the ways EBP is used in my workplace.

Spirituality and self-care are critical aspects of holistic healthcare. There are various ways nurses can incorporate these aspects in healthcare. Nurses can accomplish this through patient care in which patients are prompted to participate in spiritual practices in conformance with their values and beliefs (Pfeiffer, 2018). The nurses can also engage in self-care by upholding their health and well-being. For instance, this was necessary when nurses were treating COVID-19 patients without their families (Green, 2021). These practices orient with the Christian worldview as they promote faith and healing, stewardship, and love and compassion.

In conclusion, these evidence-based practices, spirituality, and self-care are critical in healthcare settings. They ensure quality holistic care to patients in a favorable environment. They orient with the Christian worldview as they implement its teachings.
