Worldviews encompass the philosophies that guide one’s decisions in their daily lives. Therefore, this essay examines my worldview as a nurse, an appropriate theory that aligns with it, and its effect on my future practice.

My Personal Worldview

            My worldview as a nurse focuses on the provision of holistic nursing care to patients. I believe that nursing care should not only focus on the patient’s health problems but also the factors that influence their experience with a disease. The care should aim at identifying the different factors that influence patient’s adherence to the treatment plan and their ability to transform their lifestyles and behaviors (Murgia et al., 2020). Holistic nursing care empowers patients to take responsibility for their health needs, hence, sustained outcomes. I also believe that patients play a vital role in the realization of optimum care outcomes. Patients should be involved in assessing, planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating their care outcomes (Hertz & Santy-Tomlinson, 2018). Patient involvement in the care process contributes to their satisfaction as well as adherence to the treatment plans.

            Part of the holistic care in my worldview encompasses respecting patients’ cultural values, beliefs, and practices. Nurses should make care decisions that align with the diverse cultural values and practices of their patients. They should possess the cultural competencies to provide care that addresses the prioritized and potential needs of their patients (Frisch & Rabinowitsch, 2019). I also believe that nursing care should also consider the religious beliefs and practices of the patients. Nurses should assess the meaning of religious beliefs and practices to patients and their recovery process (Hertz & Santy-Tomlinson, 2018). Aspects such as having clergies attend to patients’ spiritual needs should be adopted to ensure holism in nursing care.

            My worldview also focuses on the utilization of evidence-based interventions to ensure optimum care outcomes. I believe that nurses should make their decisions based on best clinical and research evidence, expertise knowledge and the consideration of patient values (Chien, 2019). I also consider patients as unique beings with the abilities to meet their self-care needs. Nurses play the roles of assisting them to meet their needs when unable in times of illnesses. Nurses should empower patients to develop self-care abilities and meet their daily needs. Lastly, I believe that nursing is a caring profession that relies mainly on interprofessional collaboration (Camargo et al., 2018). Nurses should collaborate with other healthcare providers to meet the diverse needs of their patients.

Nursing Theory

            Dorothea Orem’s theory of self-care deficit aligns the most with my philosophy of nursing. According to Orem, nurses’ roles in the patient care is an act of assisting them in the management and provision of self-care to ensure the maintenance or improvement in human functioning. Nursing care roles aims at helping patients to perform self-care, maintain their lives, wellbeing, and health (Ali, 2018). Orem considered that nurses help patients in times of illness to connect among themselves as well as their environment. In their role, nurses help patients to identify their self-care deficits and work towards meeting them independently for their optimum health and functioning. Orem’s theory also asserted the need for legitimate relationship between nurses and patients (Hartweg & Metcalfe, 2022). Nurses develop therapeutic relationships with their patients with the aim of influencing their behaviors and promoting healthy decisions that contribute to their health.

            Orem’s theory of self-care deficit shares some similarities with my worldview. First, I believe that patients are independent agencies that have the will and power to meet their health needs. Illness affects these abilities, increasing the need for nurses to assist patients achieve the independence they desire. The other similarity lies in the focus on the provision of holistic patient care. Orem recognized the need for nursing care to focus on aspects that include patient, health, environment, and nursing. This focus is important in ensuring that nurses provide care that is multifaceted in nature (Hartweg & Metcalfe, 2022). For example, besides providing care that aims at the identified illness, nurses should ensure that the environment and nurse-patient relationship facilitate the recovery process.

            Orem’s theory enforces my approach to care in some ways. First, it helps me identify the prioritized and potential self-care deficits for my patients. This focus helps in the development of patient-centered and appropriate plans that promote recovery and patient’s wellbeing. Orem’s theory also informs my approach to helping others to achieve their self-care needs. For example, it informs my use of approaches such as acting and doing for others, guiding, supporting, teaching, and providing an environment that supports development for those I care in my practice (Yip, 2021). Lastly, Orem’s theory informs my approach to nursing process. I incorporate the theory into the different phases of nursing process such as assessment, planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation (Helou & Zumstein-Shaha, n.d.). For example, I evaluate the developed nursing care plans based on the achieved self-care abilities by patients.

Example

            I apply my worldview in caring for my patients in my practice. An example of the way in which I recently applied it was when caring for a patient practicing Christianity. The patient believed that his health would improve if prayed by a clergy. As a result, I organized for a clergy to visit and have a prayer with the patient. The patient was satisfied with the care given and was discharged afterwards. He believed that besides treatment, prayers helped him recover from his illness.

Effect of My Worldview and Theory on My Future Practice

            My worldview and Orem’s theory will assist me in developing my future practice in some ways. First, my worldview and theory will inform my research in nursing. I will utilize the concepts of Orem’s theory in investigating the different issues that affect nursing and nursing practice (Gligor & DOMNARI, 2020). My philosophy will also inform my personal and professional development initiatives as a nurse. In this case, I will reflect on my professional experiences and explore opportunities for growth with the aim of improving my practice as a nurse. The theory and worldview will also strengthen my understanding of patient needs and the delivery of patient-centered care (Hartweg & Metcalfe, 2022). Nursing theory will help me learn about new evidence-based interventions guided by theory that I can utilize to enhance patient care outcomes.

Conclusion

            In summary, worldview is an important part of nursing practice. Worldview affects our approach to different issues in nursing and the delivery of patient care services. My worldview shares similarities with Orem’s theory of self-care deficit. I believe that my worldview and nursing theories will strengthen my ability to offer high-quality, safe, efficient, and patient-centered care as I advance my practice in nursing.
