Ethical reasoning is the process of thinking through what one ought to do in an orderly, systematic manner to justify actions based on principles. Ethical decisions cannot be based entirely on intuition or emotions. Ethical decision-making can be applied in situations in which the right decision is not clear or in which I face conflicts of rights and duties (Guidolin et al., 2022). I can apply legal and ethical decision-making to address ethical issues in healthcare like euthanasia, the use of ventilators, assisted death, and refusal of treatment.

An ethical dilemma occurs when there is a conflict between two or more ethical principles. In my work environment, I consider an ethical dilemma as a situation where there are conflicting requirements in that there is no right or wrong option. Thus, the most beneficial decision depends on the circumstances. When an ethical dilemma occurs, the nurse must choose between two equally unsatisfactory alternatives. I would analyze an ethical dilemma in my work environment by considering the following aspects: The ethical theories involved; the ethical principles involved; the persons who will be affected; and the consequences of the alternatives (Giannetta et al., 2021). Thus, when planning how to handle the dilemma, I would consider the priorities of claims and generate alternatives for resolving the dilemma. I would also consider the consequences of the alternatives.

A legal dilemma impacted our organization when a 25-year-old male with borderline mental retardation offered to donate one of his kidneys to his neighbor who needed a kidney transplant.  The man was oblivious to the health risks of donating a kidney. The man was convinced about his decision to donate his kidney to the ailing neighbor. He mentioned that the neighbor often helped him when he was in need and it was his time to return the favor. Nonetheless, he was found to be intellectually challenged, had insufficient knowledge about kidney donation, and thus was liable to make uninformed decisions. The dilemma was on whether to grant the man the right to self-determination.
