A group of nursing students wanted to learn more about the health behaviors of adolescents in their community. They decided to have students at the local high school complete a questionnaire about their health behaviors. After the adolescents completed the questionnaire, the nursing students reviewed the responses and tallied the results. They discovered that over half of the adolescents who completed the questionnaire engaged in risky sexual behaviors. They reviewed the literature, which stated that sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates in this population are on the rise.

The nursing students decided to educate the adolescents about safe sexual practices and prevention of STI transmission. The overall goal of the program was to decrease the number of adolescents engaged in risky sexual behaviors. The nursing students developed objectives and teaching strategies for this educational program.

Their objectives and teaching strategies for this education program include the following:

To instill adolescents with an intrinsic motivation to become aware of their own risky sexual behavior through class discussions and cooperative learning exercises

To promote safe sexual practices with the adolescents through demonstration of appropriate safe sex practices and inquiry-guided instruction

To develop students’ positive sexual health behaviors through scenario-based case presentations and discussions

Research the data on STIs and transmission for your community.

Review the Healthy People 2030 Leading Health Indicators (LHI). Identify the LHI that best matches STIs and transmission through risky sexual behaviors.

Critique the objectives and teaching strategies used by the student nurses.

How do the objectives and teaching strategies address the identified LHI?

What action by the nursing students illustrates the planning phase of the health planning model? Refer to Figure 7.2 in Community Health Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation.

Which system level is primarily being addressed through the educational program? Refer to Box 7-2 in Community Health Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation.

What level of prevention is being applied by the educational program the nursing students are providing? Refer to your textbook for levels of prevention.

Assignment: NSGCB 486 Reflection Part 2 Sample

Health promotion is a crucial role that nurses play in their role. The aim is to optimize health-related outcomes for the diverse populations. Nurses utilize their knowledge in assessment, planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation to develop evidence-based interventions that address the needs of their populations. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the health promotion methods utilized by the students in the assigned case study and the Healthy People2030 leading health indicators that align with the case study.

Healthy People2030 Leading Health Indicators

The case study is about the health behaviors of adolescents in their community. The results showed that adolescents engage in risky sexual behaviors, which place them at a high risk of sexually transmitted infections. Sexually transmitted infection and transmission matches with the leading health indicators stated in the Healthy People 2030. Accordingly, it aligns with the leading indicator that relates with knowledge of HIV status among the adolescents. The Healthy People 2030 leading indicators show that 85.8% of people aged 13 year and above living with HIV were aware of their disease status as per 2017 statistics. This rate is below the target of 95.0%. The additional objectives that relate to the above leading indicator include increasing linkage to HIV medical care, increasing the proportion of sexually active female adolescents and young women that get chlamydia screening, and reducing the number of new HIV infections(health.gov, n.d.).

Objectives and Teaching Strategies Critique

The objectives and teaching strategies used by the students address the above leading health indicator as identified by Healthy People 2030. First, the strategies adopted raise the awareness levels of the adolescents about risky sexual behaviors and their predisposed health problems. Raising awareness level is an effective tool to stimulate behavioral change, hence, the reduction of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. The strategies also empower the adolescents to take responsibility for their health. Health education increases their skills and capacities to make informed decisions on issues related to sexuality. The objectives address the health indicator by reducing the rates of sexually transmitted infections through positive changes in sexual behaviors among the youth(Wilkins et al., 2022). It also instills them positive attitude towards sexuality-related issues, which will lower the rates of new sexually transmitted infections.

Planning is one of the stages of the health planning model. The phase entails the use of the assessment data to develop goals and objectives. There is also the exploration of the potential alternatives that can be adopted to meet the health needs of the population. An example of planning from the nursing students’ actions is using the data obtained from the adolescents to develop an education plan on safe sexual practices and prevention of STI transmission(Leichliter et al., 2021). The development of objectives and teaching strategies are also examples of planning.

The system level that is being addressed through the educational program is the subsystem. This is because it influences other outcomes that relate to sexuality. Health education increases knowledge and improves skills, which are the subsystem. These subsystems will influence system outcomes such as the adoption of healthy and safe lifestyles to prevent sexual transmitted infections. The level of prevention being applied in the case study is primary prevention. Primary prevention raises awareness, promotes lifestyle and behavioral change, and early identification of cases through screening (Leichliter et al., 2021). Health education is an example of primary level of health promotion, which raises awareness among the population.

Conclusion

The activity by the nursing students aligns with the leading indicators identified in Healthy People 2030. The objectives and strategies support the realization of the outcomes of the leading indicator. The methods used by the students are primary methods of health promotion. They also applied strategies of the planning phase of the health planning model.
