The purpose of this paper is to discuss spiritual needs for parents who keep postponing treatment interventions for their child due to religious beliefs. The paper considers biomedical principles and the intersection with spirituality and religious practices of family.

Allowing Mike to Make Irrational Decisions
Physicians have a professional and ethical obligation to respect patient autonomy as part of the biomedical ethical principles. Patient autonomy entails the right of a patient to make decisions about their medical care and treatment without the influence of healthcare providers. Patient autonomy shows patient preferences and perspective informed by contextual issues like religion and spiritual beliefs (Sabo, 2021). These issues influence the choices that patients make regarding the kind of treatment interventions that they should get from physicians.
In this case, James is a minor whose parents exercise complete decision making and autonomy because he is incompetent. Based on patient autonomy, the parents, Mike and Joanne, make decisions on the kind of medical treatment that James should get. The physician involved should offer sufficient information and ensure that Mike and Joanne understand and appreciate the magnitude of the situation (Iheanacho, 2022). Therefore, the physician can only advise Mike about the effects of his decisions but should not stop him from making them. The physician should demonstrate the impacts of the choices that Mike is making but never impose his beliefs on him. The physician should emphasize the need to make rational decisions for the benefit of James as opposed to what the parents wish for the boy. The physician should demonstrate that irrational choices and actions will harm James as opposed to helping attain better health.
Sickness and Health; Medical Intervention and Trusting in God
Religion plays a critical part in health as influences the choices and decisions that patients make related their condition. Christians need to consider health as a virtue which allows them to be with others in difficult moments. Health reflects God’s love and good health. The Christian worldview considers good health as a gift from God while sickness is a component of the suffering and difficulties that God pronounced due to Original sin (Bibler et al., 2018). However, Christians need to consider sickness as a normal occurrence in life that allows them to develop interventions to have better health in the future.
Medical interventions are steps and actions to restore health when one falls sick. A Christian should consider medical intervention as a way for God to show his miraculous powers and heal the sick. Christians should consider medical interventions positively as they are aimed at restoration of health and provide a chance for God to demonstrate His healing power. Christians should not oppose medical interventions as they are called to accept science and its biomedical uses to prevent and eliminate unnecessary human suffering. Medical interventions, together with prayers lead to healing and restoration of health (Hatab, 2021). God has bestowed intelligence onto human beings and through this power, allowed them to discover medical interventions to cure diseases and eliminate suffering. Therefore, Christians should consider medical knowledge as God’s gift to heal the people.
Mike needs to maintain his faith in God and believe that He has power to heal James. As a Christian Mike should allow the physician to continue with the medical interventions and treatments for his son while he prays and believes that he shall get healed. He should continue to pray for miracles and allow James to undergo the dialysis and later on a transplant to restore his health. Based on Christian worldview, Mike should understand that God uses people to perform miracles and thus the couple should trust that spiritual healing will happen and allow the physician to do his work.
The principles of beneficence and non-maleficence implore providers to provide benefits to patients and not harm them (Hoehner, 2020). In this case, Mike should reason on trusting God and treating James by allowing the physician and his team to complete the different medical procedures, especially the suggested kidney transplant. Mike should honor these ethical principles by acknowledging that a kidney transplant would offer benefits and reduce any potential harm to the boy. Mike should reason that the physician cannot harm James and is doing all in the best interest of his health and restoration. By permitting his son to undergo the medical procedures, Mike would be using God’s gift through the physician to attain healing for his son. Therefore, he should trust that James would be healed through the interventions by the physician and the healthcare team.
Spiritual Needs Assessment
A spiritual needs assessment in a critical model that allows physicians and other healthcare providers to know a patient’s spiritual concerns and needs. The main goal of a spiritual needs assessment is to enable providers support patients incorporate their preferences, especially spiritual and religious practices to attain a holistic care experience and improve their perception about healing (Iheanacho, 2022). The assessment encourages patients to utilize available spiritual resources to improve their overall wellness. Carrying out a spiritual assessment before interventions to treat a patient allows physicians to improve their interactions and therapeutic alliances with patients. Through the assessment, patients and even providers can review their faith and spiritual perspectives, attain growth and resiliency to deal with different situations and conditions (Tilburt et al., 2018). Providers can use assessment tools like FICA and HOPE to understand the underlying issues affecting patients and the kind of decisions and choices that they make regarding care.
In this case, having a spiritual needs assessment will enable the physician to help Mike and Joanne develop better approaches and interventions for James. They will review their perspective on the medical interventions and embrace the recommended actions by the physician and his team to guarantee healing for James (Hatab, 2021). The spiritual needs assessment tools will establish a safe way to interact with Mike and discuss his religious beliefs concerning the health of their son with any judgmental perspective. However, the physician can refer Mike and Joanne to chaplain who may be in a better position to understand their perspectives on treatment of James.
Conclusion
The case study demonstrates that religious beliefs and spirituality play a critical part in healthcare and medical decisions by patients and their families. The case shows that Christianity influences perception of different health conditions and the decisions as well as choices that individuals take when accessing healthcare services. The worldview emphasizes the need to follow medical interventions and treatment protocols recommended by physicians to attain healing and restoration of health.
