Discussion: Developing a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice

Dissemination is the targeted distribution of information and intervention materials to a target clinical practice or public health audience (Brownson et al., 2018). My preferred dissemination strategies include disseminating information on the organization’s website and publishing project findings in peer-reviewed journals. The website would be preferred since the web is a highly cost-effective dissemination channel for the organization, and access to the data is fast and simultaneous for users (Ross-Hellauer et al., 2020). Publishing in peer-reviewed journals would also be preferred since it ensures that the data is permanently available to the widest possible audience across the globe.

           My least preferred dissemination strategies include presenting study findings at national conferences of professional associations and discussing the project on the local radio. Although presentation at conferences and meetings allows for rapid dissemination of findings, I would not prefer it because the audience is usually narrow, and the depth of information that can be provided in this method is limited (Brownson et al., 2020). For example, if I present at the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses conference, other NPs, RNs, and healthcare professionals would be excluded. Furthermore, presenting the study findings on local radio may not be ideal since it reaches a limited audience (Ashcraft et al., 2020). Besides, presentation on local radio is time-limited, and there are a lot of interruptions for commercial breaks. 

           Potential barriers when disseminating through the organization’s website include the lack of a well-built website that is easily accessible and with an easy user interface design. Access to the website may also be restricted to a particular geographic location, which can limit access to the information to individuals globally. The website barriers can be mitigated by involving the IT team in developing an easy-to-use website and removing access restrictions (Ross-Hellauer et al., 2020). Furthermore, barriers to publishing data in peer-reviewed journals include delays with publication by reviewers and rejection of the study findings (Ashcraft et al., 2020). This can be addressed by creating a transparent process where the identities of the author and reviewers are known.

This may include: unit-level or organizational-level presentations, poster presentations, and podium presentations at organizational, local, regional, state, and national levels, as well as publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Reflect on which type of dissemination strategy you might use to communicate EBP.

Post at least two dissemination strategies you would be most inclined to use and explain why. Explain which dissemination strategies you would be least inclined to use and explain why. Identify at least two barriers you might encounter when using the dissemination strategies you are most inclined to use.
