Nurses play a crucial role in the promotion of optimum health outcomes for their diverse populations. Nurses work in highly complex and dynamic environments that affect their decisions in the care process. According to Census Study Report on the Future of Nursing 2020-2030, nurses have a crucial role to play in advancing health equity. They are responsible for advocating the rights of all the Americans to access opportunities and healthcare services to enable them achieve the highest level of health. However, it is crucial that nurses receive high quality education, be provided with supportive work environment, and opportunities that enhance their autonomy. The realization of health equity also requires the prioritization of the needs of the nursing workforce. Issues such as nursing shortage and strengthening competencies among nurses to address current and emerging population needs should be considered. Nurses also promote health equity by addressing social determinants of health among the population such as race, ethnicity, and income level. Interventions such as policy advocacy enable the adoption of strategies that align with the needs of the diverse populations (Jl et al., 2021). Therefore, the role of nurses in advancing health equity cannot be downgraded in the current and future of the American healthcare.

            My leadership and ethical nursing practice supports the achievement of health equity in the United States. First, I respect diversity in the provision of patient care. Nurses provide care to patients from diverse backgrounds with unique needs. I advocate the provision of care that aligns with patients’ values, beliefs, and practices for optimum outcomes. The consideration promotes equity by encouraging populations to explore the resources and opportunities available for their optimum health. I also act as patient advocate in my role. I ensure the adoption of care interventions that promote safety, quality and efficiency in the care process. I also ensure the adoption of policies and interventions that promote inclusivity for all. I link patients with the existing community resources to help them learn how to optimize on their care outcomes (Nardi et al., 2020). The advocacy role that I play contribute to health equity by ensuring the adopted interventions in nursing and healthcare meet the needs of all irrespective of their backgrounds.
