The selected topic for the capstone change proposal is the significance of patient education throughout their hospital stay and their understanding of it before and after discharge on a medical-surgical floor. Patients need to be properly informed and prepared to manage their disease, adhere to safety measures, comply with medication, and current interventions (Refai et al., 2018). For instance, recovering from surgical procedures can be highly intimidating. Proper knowledge about what is expected during the hospital stay period and the expectation before and post-discharge are critical. Surgical patients can benefit from education through knowledge acquisition, improved self-esteem, enhance self-concept, enhanced self-care, enhanced pain control, minimized disruption in daily activities, increased satisfaction with care, improve compliance with medication, and reduced anxiety (Tweed et al., 2021). Education also promotes care continuity and minimizes complications associated with surgery. However, failure to provide education leads to poor clinical outcomes, reduced quality of life, more hospital stay days, and increased cost of healthcare. The proposed topic can be categorized under leadership. According to van Diggele et al. (2020), effective leadership is greatly revered in healthcare education and is increasingly accepted as fundamental in the provision of superior standards of education, clinical practice, and research. The realization of healthcare needs in the twenty-first century requires competent leaders across all health professions and departments. Consequently, proper leadership in a medical-surgical unit is crucial to the success of patient education during the hospital stay days, before, and post-discharge periods. Leadership is not only needed in a medical-surgical unit to guide education to enhance patient outcomes but also to foster collaborations across disciplines and move beyond organizational borders to ensure better patient outcomes.
