The Statue of Liberty was originally created in France and was supposed to be a lighthouse. However, when it was sent to the United States, the copper skin oxidized and turned green. The statue is 151 feet tall (46 meters) and is made of copper sheeting that is 3/32 inch (.094 cm) thick. It weighs 225 tons (205 metric tons). The skin is held together with 2,000 bronze screws.

The sculptor of The Statue of Liberty was Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. He was born in France in 1834, and his creation of the Statue of Liberty was a result of his patriotic feelings for his home country. After the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, he conceived the idea for a large statue that would represent freedom and democracy to all who saw it. Bartholdi was heavily influenced by two major cultural events: the French Revolution and the American Civil War (Kuntzleman et al., 2020). The French Revolution symbolized liberty, equality, and brotherhood for all people, while the American Civil War represented the struggle for freedom from slavery. These two events helped to shape Bartholdi’s vision for creating The Statue of Liberty.

There are so many things that I love about The Statue of Liberty artwork, but two that really stand out to me are her welcoming stance and the way her light shines down on us. The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of hope and freedom, and it is always been an incredible sight to see (Kuntzleman et al., 2020). Her stance is so welcoming and open, as if she’s inviting everyone to come and be a part of her community. And the light that shines down from her torch is such a beautiful symbol of hope and guidance. It is always been incredibly moving to me every time I have seen it.

The first thing that comes to mind is a song by the band The Tragically Hip, the name of the song is “Ahead by a Century”. This song has a huge impact on a lot of people now a days, but it never really did when it was first released. The band that sang it built themselves up throughout their career to basically be referred to by many as the national band of Canada. For many like me that grew up in the 80’s and 90’s their music was pretty much the soundtrack to our lives.
This song gained its significance in 2016 when it was sung in concert for the final time. The lead singer of the band, Gord Downie, had been diagnosed with cancer and the band had embarked on a farewell tour. The last concert on this tour was broadcast through Canada, I personally streamed it online. The final song from Gord and The Hip was Ahead by a Century. Millions of people watched and sang along and as we did, we all thought back to what the music of the band meant to us and what we were losing that night.
To go along with the sheer emotion of the event, ahead by a Century is a slower song, not quite a ballad but slower than a normal 90’s alternative rock song. The words to the song describe children playing and hit hard as the gravity of the knowledge that it’s the final concert hit you. It’s a picture-perfect snapshot of the bands career and what they meant to so many people for so many years and as the song says, “this is our life”.

The cultural object I have chosen is a dance performance of Disciples of Mime and the title is “Something about The Name Jesus” by Rance Allen and Kirk Franklin. Three mimes with black and white face paint dance to teach the lyrics of the song by giving a visual aid for viewers to understand the real meaning behind the lyrics of the song. For many African American Christians, praise dancing and mimes are a way they exhibit their love and praise for their God. I believe the cultural events that influenced the creators of the song specifically for this performance is his love for his God and the Bible. He talks about how the enemy has a big influence on our decisions and how we can’t live without our voice. The book of Isaiah has influenced his song heavily. The characteristics that move the most are how fluid the movements of the dancers are, they execute the most beautiful way of communication with speaking. Another one is the all white face paint and black eyebrows, this is worn to bring attention to the facial expressions needed to convey the emotion of the performance. These characteristics helped me understand how to interpret the book of Isaiah and understand the passion behind showing praise to God.
