Mental disorders are known to have numerous negative impacts on individuals’ lives if not well managed. The implication is that there is a need to look into potential effective strategies and best ways of managing patients with the conditions. Among such conditions is a narcissistic personality disorder. The narcissistic personality is one condition that leads to a significant psychosocial disability and functional impairments (Yakeley, 2018). In addition, it is known to be highly comorbid with other conditions. However, it is still less studied as compared to other disorders. Therefore, there is a need to study more concerning this condition to enable caregivers to offer appropriate care to patients with this condition. As such, the purpose of this assignment is to describe the disorder and explore therapeutic approaches and modalities for treating patients. In addition, this assignment will cover therapeutic relationships in psychiatry and how diagnostic results can be shared with the patient without eroding the therapeutic relationship.

Description of the Disorder

A narcissistic personality disorder is a mental condition where an individual has an enhanced sense of their importance and needs excessive admiration and attention. They also do not have empathy for others and are extremely sensitive to criticism. These individuals have a wide range of behaviors which made the condition initially excluded from the DSM-5 criteria. However, the condition was eventually included in the DSM-5 criteria. According to DSM-5, patients with the condition include a show of arrogance and haughty attitudes and behaviors, showing envy or believing that others are envious of them, lack of empathy towards others, exploitative, showing a sense of entitlement, and requiring excessive admiration (Yakeley, 2018). Others include having a belief in being special, preoccupation with beauty, brilliance, power, success, and self-importance grandiose sense.

Therapeutic Approach and Modality

As earlier indicated, this condition is less studied and hence has no standardized treatment approach. I would choose psychodynamic psychotherapy, which majorly deals with defenses shown when the patient is attending the therapy session (Yakeley, 2018). I have chosen this option since it has been shown to substantially lower emergency department visits.

Therapeutic Relationships

Therapeutic relationships in psychiatry refer to an interactive relationship that exists between a psychiatric health professional and the patients they are offering care (Hartley et al., 2020). This relationship has a clear boundary, professional and positive. It is important to maintain a therapeutic relationship since it is key to improving patient outcomes. As such, it is needful to share the diagnosis of this disorder in such a way that the therapeutic relationship is not damaged. I would share the results in a patient-centered manner by involving the patient in the clinical decisions to make them feel involved. Such an approach has been shown to improve the therapeutic relationship.

Sharing Diagnosis Comparison

It is important to share diagnostic results with patients as it brings a sense of relief. However, different approaches should be used when sharing a diagnosis with an individual, family, or group session. Sharing the results with an individual is simple as no precaution will be taken since there is no risk of the patient’s condition being revealed to another person. However, with family or group sessions, it is important to seek the opinion of the patients first, if they would be comfortable when their results are shared in the presence of family members or peers (Diamond & Hersh, 2020). It is important to respect what the patient requests; if they allow the results to be shared in the presence of the family members or peers, then it can be done. However, if the patient wants the results to be revealed to them alone, then the same should be followed.

Conclusion

Mental health professionals play a significant role in offering care to patients with various mental illnesses. Narcissistic personality disorder requires careful management due to its impacts. The DSM-V criteria for the condition have been explored. Besides, aspects of the therapeutic relationship in psychiatry have been discussed.
