One of the areas in my specialities that needs improvement is addressing the social consequences of the opioid crisis. The opioid crisis has ripple effects on individuals, families, and society at large. Some of the social causes of the opioid crisis at the individual level include social isolation, stigma, and suicide. At the family level, the consequences are the loss of a loved one to overdose and emotional and financial strain. At the community level, the opioid crisis is responding to fraying social connections and the diversion of community resources (Dasgupta et al., 2018). Moreover, children living in such communities hard hit by the opioid crisis record poor performance in school, further widening the gap of achievement existing in education. This limits the future economic opportunities for the children.

The nursing theory that could be applied to the situation is the Health Promotion Model, which supports attempts to improve health by focusing on the interaction between a person’s interpersonal and physical environment as they seek to change their behaviour (Jalali et al., 2020). Furthermore, the theory acknowledges that behavioural change is not easy and thus, the involvement of certain factors that motivate change.
This is the best theory to apply because the opioid crisis is primarily a behavioural issue. Hence, using a theory that helps people change their behaviours is the most effective response to the consequences of the opioid crisis that cause social consequences to individuals and communities (Habibzadeh et al., 2020). The Health Promotion Model (HOM) can also be used for approaches that require interventions. Additionally, the theory can also be adapted to several circumstances depending on the needs of the population.

One of the theories that will be highly useful in my practice is the Health Promotion Model (HPM). As a public health nurse, my primary goal would be to ensure that people live a healthy life by promoting the health and well-being of both individuals and communities. This requires that people change their lifestyles that are associated with poor health outcomes to behaviors that promote better health (Aqta & Darawwad, 2018). The HPM is predominantly used for patient education to influence behavioral change. In my practice, I will be providing health education to individuals and populations, which necessitates the use of the theory. For example, I plan to work with vulnerable populations, underserved communities, and adolescent populations. For instance, achieving behavioral change in the adolescent population is highly challenging; hence using the HPM will be helpful in working with this population.
The HPM will be more useful in my future practice because it provides the opportunity to assess patient factors that either facilitate or prevent better health outcomes. The assessment can help to identify the socioeconomic challenges and other personal factors that impact families, individuals, and populations. For example, when providing health education to a family in which one of the members has diabetes, evaluating the socioeconomic barriers is critical because they often lead to non-compliance with the treatment plan (Stella & Ling, 2019). This acknowledges that the family is an important system in a patient’s life. My focus in working with families would be to support them to attain good health and well-being because the essence of being healthy should not just be the absence of a disease, but the holistic well-being of both the mind, body, and soul. Another benefit of the theory that will make it useful in my practice is the ability to understand the multidimensional quality of a person and their interaction with the environment in the process of pursuing health.
