Discussion One

Emerging technologies have played a significant role in promoting the quality and safety of care provided. Patients are now able to access some of the most effective diagnostic tools and treatment approaches in addition to innumerable minimally-invasive procedures promoting less suffering and quicker healing (Jin et al., 2020). With current technology, patients enjoy remote consultation with a wide range of specialists and targeted treatment promptly, at a reduced cost on the available mobile apps among other online platforms. Additionally, new treatment technologies have been reported to improve patient outcomes besides enhancing their quality of life. The adoption of new technology within the healthcare facility has also ensured that huge amounts of data can be safely stored, and easily accessed by authorized personnel when needed. Data platforms such as electronic health records have made it possible for the integration of medical records to promote sound clinical decision maiming, hence promoting the accuracy of stored information and reducing incidences of medical errors.

Implementation of electronic health records (EHR) is increasing across several healthcare organizations with less attention being paid to the associated ethical and legal issues. For instance, registered nurses are obliged to uphold patients’ privacy and confidentiality, which can be undermined when patient health information stored in the EHR is accessed by unauthorized personnel (Portnoy et al., 2020). Based on the HIPAA, protected health information (PHI), and the requirements for privacy and confidentiality, several measures can be implemented to uphold the patient’s privacy and confidentiality. For instance, the use of firewalls, intrusion detection software, and antivirus software can help prevent access to patient information by unauthorized personnel and protect the integrity of stored data (Olla & Tan, 2022). Consequently, nurses will be advised not to share their IDs and always log off once they have collected the required data.

Discussion Two

For the successful implementation of an EHR system in a healthcare organization, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) requires the protection of patient privacy and confidentiality (Farhadi et al., 2019). Other than the security and privacy rules outlined by the HIPAA, advanced registered nursing practitioners are also required to ensure that the integrity and availability of patient information are also observed (Bani Issa et al., 2020). Given that patient medical records are collected and shared among different healthcare professionals, it is important to ensure that the stored data is accurate and not changed whatsoever. APRNs can face legal implications or even lose their license in case of inaccurate documentation of data in the EHR system. Consequently, it’s the ethical obligation of the clinician to ensure that the patient can access their healthcare information at any time, without compromising the availability of stored data. This will help promote their autonomy when it comes to making decisions concerning their treatment plan.

APRNs must consider strong security and privacy policies to ensure that the patient’s information is secure. Consequently, poor data integrity with the use of telehealth in the process of care delivery has been reported secondary to documentation errors among other factors (Azadi et al., 2018). Consequently, system hacking or security breach has also been associated with the unavailability of patient information. To avoid such incidences, data integrity can be maintained by the use of drop-down menus and screen designs to make the EHR system accurate and user-friendly. Additionally, ensuring the availability of patient information will require the use of a backup system, and security features preventing access or compromise by unauthorized personnel.

Discussion 1: Discuss how emerging technologies (consumer, mobile and telehealth technologies) impact patient care and the storage of health information. What is one ethical or legal issue related to EHRs that can impact a registered nursing practice? According to HIPAA, protected health information (PHI), and the requirements for privacy and confidentiality, what is one measure you can implement in your practice to protect patient privacy and confidentiality?

Discussion 2: Review HIPAA, protected health information (PHI), and requirements for privacy and confidentiality in EHRs. Discuss one ethical and one legal issue related to the use of EHRs that directly impact advanced registered nursing practice. Consider the emerging role of the telehealth and the EHR in patient care delivery and compromise of patient data using telehealth applications and measures you can implement in your own practice to protect patient privacy and confidentiality.
