            For the successful implementation of an EHR system in a healthcare organization, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) requires the protection of patient privacy and confidentiality (Farhadi et al., 2019). Other than the security and privacy rules outlined by the HIPAA, advanced registered nursing practitioners are also required to ensure that the integrity and availability of patient information are also observed (Bani Issa et al., 2020). Given that patient medical records are collected and shared among different healthcare professionals, it is important to ensure that the stored data is accurate and not changed whatsoever. APRNs can face legal implications or even lose their license in case of inaccurate documentation of data in the EHR system. Consequently, it’s the ethical obligation of the clinician to ensure that the patient can access their healthcare information at any time, without compromising the availability of stored data. This will help promote their autonomy when it comes to making decisions concerning their treatment plan.

            APRNs must consider strong security and privacy policies to ensure that the patient’s information is secure. Consequently, system hacking or security breach has also been associated with the unavailability of patient information.
