Assignment Organize your data in a frequency table. Include the following: pulse rate, frequency, cumulative frequency, and relative frequency.
Math 115 General Education Statistics Project 1:
Data Summary: Numerical and Graphical Summaries of Pulse Rates
Project Details:
The goal of this project is to obtain summary statistics for the variables in a data set. Measure your pulse rate 50 times over a period of one week, but do not take more than one measurement in any 10-minute period or more than 15 measurements in one day. Be sure to record the associated activities at the time the measurements are taken, e.g., during exercise, after meditating, upon waking up, etc.

• Part I: Organize your data in a frequency table. Include the following: pulse rate, frequency, cumulative frequency, and relative frequency.
• Part II: Summarize your data in a table, include the following:
o Find the mean, median, and mode(s).
o Create a five number summary. Identify any potential outliers. Be sure to show your work involved in identifying outliers.
o Find the range.
o Use a computer or calculator to find the standard deviation.
• Part III: Regardless of the shape of your data, assume that it is bell-shaped in order to answer the following questions.
o What percentage of your data actually falls within one standard deviation of the mean? How does this compare with the 68% estimated by the Empirical Rule?
o Find the pulse rate that divides the top 10% of rates from the bottom 90%.
• Part IV: Create the following visual displays of your data:
o a stem and leaf plot
o a boxplot
o a histogram
• Part V: Comment on the shape of your data based upon your histogram in Part III. Is it bimodal, bell-shaped, left or right-skewed, etc.? Give a written assessment of the shape based upon your record of events while taking measurements.
• Part VI: Appendix – include the list of 50 measurements as well as the record of events while taking measurements.
In your report, clearly label all tables and when appropriate give the units of measure. Be sure your presentation is clear and organized.
Project reports should be typed, whenever practical. Symbols and calculations can be difficult to enter in the computer, so feel free to do those by hand. Graphs should be done using a computer program (such as Excel, or Rguroo to construct the visual displays. Hand-drawn graphs are not acceptable.
Attach this cover sheet to the front of your project with your name filled in and make sure the project is firmly stapled or clipped.
