Nursing practice is regulated by set laws that are territory and state-specific. Regulations promote and protect professional integrity. Every state and territory in the US set laws to govern the practice of nursing. The Nursing Practice Act dictates these laws and forms the basis for nursing practice regulations specific to safe and competent nursing care practices and law enforcement (Huynh et al., 2022). The board of nursing in individual states is in charge of and enforces these laws by taking disciplinary actions against violating nurses who pose a threat to the public through unsafe practices. I practice within the state of Texas and I have read the Texas Nurse Practice Act which is regulated by the Texas Board of Nursing.

The Texas Nurse Practice Act regulates the nursing professional codes and business practices to ensure public protection. This is achieved through registration and licensing after successful completion of nursing training from accredited institutions, licensing renewal, competency assessment, and professional development through continuing education hours (Cassiani et al., 2020). This ensures compliance with legal and ethical guidelines in nursing care practice by competent nurses. Violations of the Nurse Practice Act result in disciplinary consequences such as license revocation.

The Nurse Practice Act also makes provisions for nursing practice standards. These include clarity on the scope of practice that is usually dependent on the educational level, the specialty of an individual’s practice, and the overall nursing practice experience (Huynh et al., 2022). AGACNP for example provides nursing care to acutely, chronically, and critically ill adult patients. This is after attaining a master’s level educational requirement and qualifications as a registered nurse. The privileges to perform invasive procedures by nurse practitioners are granted through supervision by physicians who act as proctors in addition to the mentioned qualifications. Regulations for ordering medications and devices by the Texas Board of Pharmacy require that the nurse practitioner is licensed and authorized to order and prescribe medications. This can also be done as a delegation from the physician. State regulations legislature can dictate the scope of a nurse’s full practice. State and local institutional regulations can restrict this scope depending on the healthcare setting and assigned roles and responsibilities.
