Advocacy is the process of creating support for an issue or cause and influencing other individuals to take action. Advocates contribute to change by influencing and directing decision-makers towards a specific course. Nurse leaders act as advocates for patients, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in their organizations, nationally and internationally (Williams et al., 2018). Every nurse leader has an opportunity to positively impact the nursing profession through day-to-day advocacy for nurses and the profession. Besides, it is vital that point-of-care nurses build and utilize advocacy skills to address workplace concerns, foster positive work environments, and advocate for the nursing profession.

As a nurse leader, I can employ various advocacy strategies to foster positive change in my current healthcare organization. For example, I can apply to be a member of health councils, committees, and quality improvement teams in the organization and county since they provide members with opportunities for advocacy. When serving on a council, committee, or quality improvement team, it will be crucial to represent the needs of nurses and patients (Williams et al., 2018). Thus, I will need to consider the potential benefits and consequences of an issue or proposed solution for nurses and other healthcare professionals. I have identified that the ideal approach to work through the needs of various groups is to reflect on what will be the best for the patient or patient population served in due course.

Involvement in organization-wide activities is yet another approach I can take since it provides opportunities to advocate for nurses and the nursing profession. As a nurse leader, I can take advantage of employee forums and town hall meetings to raise awareness of the issues affecting nurses, healthcare professionals, and patients. I would employ effective advocacy skills in such opportunities, such as communicating with sincerity and fostering a sense of trust (Myers, 2020). Furthermore, I would identify an issue, propose a solution, and offer to participate in implementing the proposed solution, which would be an effective approach to serve as an advocate. I would also establish positive, collaborative relationships with other healthcare professionals and members of the committees to garner the support needed to address the issue (Williams et al., 2018). Successful collaboration would require effective communication with the groups involved in advocacy, seeking input when suitable, and providing continuous reports concerning advocacy progress.

Another effective advocacy strategy will be to identify a problem and propose a policy to address it by approaching an elected legislator. Owing to my knowledge and experience with the healthcare system, I can propose policies to lawmakers that will address issues faced by providers and patients (Myers, 2020). For example, I can draft a practical policy and present it to an elected legislator for enaction in the State or federal legislative houses. Besides, I would educate and convince the lawmaker how the policy will improve healthcare delivery and health outcomes and reduce healthcare costs to individuals and the state.
