Nurses apply multiple strategies to address health problems. The importance of evidence-based practice (EBP) continues to gain ground since health care interventions should be relevant, accurate, and up-to-date. An essential component of EBP is scientific evidence which nurses obtain from qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research. Due to their relevance in patient care and advancing nursing practice, health care professionals should understand how the different research methods differ. Qualitative research entails collecting and exploring data to find common patterns (Squires & Dorsen, 2018). Such patterns in health care include perceptions of health and diseases and the use of technology in regular practice. Common qualitative data collection methods include interviews, observations, and focused-group discussions. Quantitative research entails collecting and analyzing numerical data (Suresh, 2018). Purposes include testing a theory and finding patterns and averages. Experimental, quasi-experimental, and correlational studies are common qualitative research designs. Mixed-methods research combines qualitative and quantitative data to answer research questions.

In most EBP projects, nurses and other change proponents review current literature to get scientific evidence to guide practice change. However, not all primary research articles meet the criteria for the appropriate research for literature review. Generally, the best evidence should be in levels I and II of the evidence hierarchy, although articles in level III evidence are also appropriate for inclusion. Preferred research includes randomized controlled trials since randomization reduces measurement errors (Nab et al., 2019). Besides high-level evidence, the quality should be high too. Quality is determined by sample size and the impacts of research limitations on the overall outcomes.

My EBP project evaluates the effectiveness of a preventive bundle in reducing the incidence of pressure ulcers among elderly and debilitated patients. Important criteria to consider for supporting the proposed intervention include the level of evidence, quality, and generalizability of the results. Randomized controlled trials will be prioritized before considering lower-level evidence research like quasi-experimental and cohort studies. High-quality evidence implies that the results are generalizable and that the research has a sufficient sample size. Other criteria include reasonably consistent results, recommendations for practice application, and a comprehensive literature review that refers to peer-reviewed scholarly evidence.
