Topic 9 Discussion Question 1-2
Q1: Personal strengths and weaknesses in reading professional presentations
Reading professional presentations is one of the most engaging strategies for disseminating information and knowledge and enhancing the incorporation of evidence-based practice in nursing practice. Although professional presentations are highly interactive and objective, various thresholds exist for creating and delivering high-quality presentations. For example, building a rapport with the audience, setting preferences for questions, and establishing objectives and outcomes are ideal steps for a successful presentation (Dolan, 2017). While complying with these requirements leads to effective presentation skills, personal strengths and weaknesses determine how individuals create and deliver engaging professional presentations.
One of my strengths that allows me to communicate effectively through professional presentations is the ability to logically organize content and incorporate evidence from external sources to enhance presentations’ credibility and authority. According to Dolan (2017), establishing the presentation’s credibility by citing references, organizing content logically, and using appropriate anecdotes and examples enhance the quality and relevance of the professional presentation. Despite exhibiting this strength, I have a weakness in maintaining composure, eye contact with the audience, and an appropriate tone throughout the presentation. According to Vogel & Viale (2018), fear of public speaking is a common phenomenon that compromises the overall quality of the presentation. The authors recommend rehearsing roles, developing impactful openings, and keeping the audience’s interest through questions and examples as viable strategies for eliminating the fear of public speaking.
Q2: Sustainable Change and Evidence-Based Practice
The current healthcare systems encounter competing needs and increased demands for quality and convenient care, considering the widespread use of advanced technologies, the central role of evidence-based practice (EBP), and the ever-changing demographic aspects of patient populations. The need to sustain change by anchoring new approaches in organizational cultures is the new norm for healthcare organizations. In this sense, institutions endeavor to implement quality improvement initiatives and maintain new techniques to guarantee improved performance and care quality. However, sustaining change is a multivariate issue that relies massively upon barriers and facilitators.
For instance, two prevalent barriers to change sustenance and the implementation of the EBP change proposal are a lack of organizational support and financial and human resource constraints (Cowie et al., 2020). These factors deprive the organization of opportunities to implement change initiatives and sustain new approaches in institutional cultures. According to Busetto et al. (2018), shortages in nursing staff, funding issues, and leadership and senior management involvement in change are determinants of the success or failure of change initiatives. It is possible to address these barriers by implementing talent retention programs, obtaining leaders’ buy-in by disseminating evidence-based findings, and mobilizing resources through stakeholder involvement and consensus decision-making.
