Professional nursing organizations play significant roles in advancing the scope of practice of nurses. Joining professional organizations enables nurses to unite with other nurses, and national and international conferences, get updated about recent changes in nursing practice and obtain specialized certifications (Kalaitzidis & Jewell, 2020). Three of the most preferred nursing organizations include the American Nurses Association (ANA), the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL), and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).

The NCSBN is a professional nursing organization that permits bodies governing nursing practice to converse and act on challenges facing nursing practice and the nursing profession. The mission of NCSBN is to provide support and empowerment to nursing regulators in their responsibility to safeguard the public. The only prerequisite for joining NCSBN is passing one of their licensing exams.
The American Nursing Organization (ANA) is crucial in advocating for the nursing practice and profession by promoting superior standards of nursing practice, advocating for solutions to healthcare problems affecting nurses and the public, supporting the health and well-being of nurses, and championing for safe and ethical nursing working environment (Liz Stokes, 2019). ANA is the umbrella professional nursing organization for all nurses and enjoys membership from all states. The responsibility of ANA in enhancing practice includes lobbying, advocacy on work-related issues, and professional development.
The American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) is the mouthpiece of nursing leadership whose mission is to change health care through professional and prominent leadership (AONL, 2022). The organization is playing an instrumental role in advancing the professional development of nurse leaders using competency-based learning and innovative experiences. The organization also plays a crucial role in advocating for positive change with a shared voice to ensure healthcare transformation. AONL has a partnership with the American Hospital Association to ensure that the outlook and needs of nurse leaders are taken and addressed through effective policies (AONL, 2022). The advocacy roles of AONL include regulatory and legislative areas and the advancement of nursing leadership values.

The health care legislation that is being considered in New York State is New York State Health Care Reform Act (NYHCRA). HCRA is an outstanding element of New York State´s Health Care financing laws which regulate techniques of reimbursements and financing multiple healthcare initiatives (Health.ny.gov, 2022). The legislation also requires that some third-party payers and healthcare service providers be involved in funding these programs by submitting approved surcharges and evaluations. This Act is poised to significantly influence nursing practice. The implementation of NYHCRA has reduced healthcare inequalities leading to an increase in the number of people seeking healthcare services. As a result, there will be more pressure on nursing practice to care for the increased number of patients.
Advocacy is crucial in nursing practice. Nurses have the potential to influence nursing and healthcare changes through political advocacy (Abbasinia et al., 2020). One of the strategies for political advocacy that nurses can use in addressing various challenges in the nursing and healthcare field is by leveraging stakeholders. This strategy involves ensuring a structured dialogue among relevant stakeholders concerning nursing challenges that need to be addressed (Schaeffer & Haebler, 2019). Engaging various stakeholders in lobbying for nursing issues is critical in soliciting support to address the challenges and also help in spreading the information to other people. The stakeholders may include politicians, activists, and nurse practitioners. Another strategy for political advocacy in nursing is joining active politics and seeking elective positions as legislatures to champion nursing interests at the legislative levels (Schaeffer & Haebler, 2019). Nurses can also join lobby groups and attend board meetings to champion the interests of nurses.
