Evaluation of Outcomes Sample

Burnout among healthcare workers is a common problem that affects most healthcare workers worldwide. Not only does it compromise patient safety but also compromises the health of healthcare workers while reducing their productivity of workers (Dall’Ora et al., 2020). This, in turn, leads to poor health outcomes, reduced patient satisfaction, and reduced nurses’ quality of life, reduced performance, and increased risk of lawsuit charges. Furthermore, burnout can lead to a reduction in personal accomplishment, depersonalization, and emotional exhaustion that can result in an increased intention to quit the job as well as a high turnover rate (Dall’Ora et al., 2020). Mitigating these effects requires the implementation of evidence-based practice to reduce burnout and its negative effects. For this project, I chose rest breaks as an intervention to reduce fatigue and burnout. I intend to implement the project, however, having an evaluation plan is essential to help in tracking the effectiveness of this intervention. For this current paper, the aim is to discuss the evaluation plan for my EBP in terms of its outcomes.

Plan to Evaluate Outcomes.

Evaluation of a project is an ongoing process for a quality improvement project. Evaluation can start before the implementation stage and continue in the post-implementation stage. The aim is to track the progress of the project as well as identify areas that require improvement (Backhouse & Ogunlayi, 2020). Evaluation is always a rigorous process whose results are dependent on the goals and mission set for the project at the beginning. As a result, coming up with clear objectives and goals as well as the expected outcomes is paramount to the evaluation process.

When drawing an evaluation plan, there is a need to identify the personnel who will be involved in the evaluation. The first group is individuals who will collect data, analyze, and share data for the pre-intervention, during the intervention, and post-intervention (Backhouse & Ogunlayi, 2020). The data collected will present the steps taken to achieve outcomes. A comparison of the findings before and after the implementation will be useful in assessing the progress made. An improvement in the post-interventional period more than the pre-interventional period will indicate that the quality improvement project has achieved its primary purpose (Dagne & Beshah, 2021). On the other hand, negative results or stagnation of findings will indicate a deficiency in the quality improvement project or rather inappropriateness of the intervention (van der Goot et al., 2018). Such a scenario will require either revision of the whole project to identify the gaps and make improvements or disbandment of the whole project. If I were to implement my project and evaluate it, for instance, the expected positive outcomes for my proposed project would be marked by a reduction in fatigue and burnout among nurses as demonstrated by improvement in quality of life, reduced emotional exhaustion, improvement in personal accomplishment, improvement of quality of patient care, and reduction in nursing turnover among others. Thereafter, continuous evaluation of the project should follow.

Internal Sources to be Impacted

In addition to the primary intended outcomes of a quality improvement initiative, it can also impact other internal sectors in an organization. For instance, the improvement initiative can act as an eye-opening for the formation of quality improvement teams. These teams can hold regular meetings and delegate over the touching issues in the organization (Li et al., 2019). Through these meetings, discussions on the way forward including coming up with newer improvement initiatives are made. The team can also share their findings through publications with the entire organization to aid in coming up with many interventions.

Conclusion

Evaluation is a continuous process for any quality improvement initiative to track the progress of the initiative. Findings of the evaluation guide the next course of action including revision or disbandment of the initiative. Consequently, the initiative can impact various aspects of the organization with the imminent improvement of the organization. Therefore, evaluation should be a process that should be included in any quality improvement initiative.

Professor’s Tips

Think about the idea you have been developing this semester as a final DNP project. You have shown that your intervention would make a difference if executed perfectly in a perfect world. Take the individual out of the picture, and think about how you would assess a system change. The outcome is a system change. How will you assess clinical significance, knowing that it differs from statistical significance?
Discussion Guidelines
Initial Post

In considering quality improvement in the healthcare industry:

If you were to implement your practice change, how would you plan to evaluate the outcome (dependent variable)?
Identify other possible internal sources that may also be impacted by your change initiative.

Be specific and support your answer to the questions. Post your initial response to the Discussion Board by the end of the day Thursday. Include at least one source in addition to the required weekly readings (cite in APA format).
Response Post(s)

Use the RISE Model for Meaningful Feedback (PDF)Links to an external site. to provide thorough feedback to at least two classmates’ initial posts by the end of day Sunday.
Submission

Post your initial and follow up responses and review full grading criteria on the Discussion 12.1: Evaluation of Outcomes page.
